Webnet at the treetop walk in Nuremberg

Walking through the forest, at eye level with the treetops. Jakob Rope Systems was commissioned to install the stainless steel mesh Webnet as a railing infill and safety element for the treetop walk at Nuremberg Zoo.

Initial situation and concept:

At a height of up to 20 meters, visitors to the city of Nuremberg's zoo will be able to walk along a 450-meter-long and 2.5-meter-wide treetop path. Themed stations around animals and plants, picnic areas, play areas and educational elements invite to explore the trail and the forest. The planting along the path is another highlight. The aim of the treetop walk is to bring visitors of all ages closer to nature in the forest at eye level.

The solid wood treetop walk was built by the company Holzbau Dengler GmbH. The ideas of zoo designer Martin Schuchert are reflected in the aesthetic appearance of the path. Likewise those of architect Johanna Stöger, whose office Stöger + Kölbl Architekten GmbH was responsible for the planning and implementation.

Construction and implementation:

Jakob Rope Systems was commissioned to fill the wooden railings. The project planners wanted an element that was as transparent as possible and of the highest quality as an infill and fall protection between the base and handrail of the railings. The stainless steel mesh used, Webnet, is a filigree structure that offers great tensioning force and sufficient flexibility. This meant that all directional changes in the path could be implemented correctly during installation. The Webnet sections are mounted with a circumferential edge rope in rope guide plates. If the plinth and handrail timbers are damaged, the Webnet sections can be easily removed and refitted using the screws in the wood.

Jakob Rope Systems sent the individual Webnet elements cut to size to Nuremberg. A total of 850 square meters of Webnet were installed there. Jakob Rope Systems worked with specialists from Holzbau Dengler in Rinchnach to integrate the Webnet elements into the construction project.

The Webnet stainless steel mesh provides a high-quality solution for safety and maximum transparency. As a safety element approved by the building authorities (DIBt approval), Webnet provides the treetop walkway with the necessary safety against falls.
